Foucault is generally regarded to be a harsh critic of Marxism, both concerning its analytical capacities as well as its political dangers. This strongly contrasts with Foucault’s positive reference to Marx throughout his works as well as methodical, analytical, and political parallels. In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Foucault’s death in 2024, we will hold a symposium on the question how this ambivalence can be understood, what it might mean for the legacy of Foucault’s thought, and why it is such a pivotal connection for contemporary and future struggles.
